Salesforce sells more than one marketing product, and the names are easy to mix up. The two most common are Marketing Cloud Engagement, built for large-scale consumer journeys, and Marketing Cloud Account Engagement, the product most people still call Pardot, built for B2B lead generation. Picking the wrong one leads to paying for features you never use, or missing the ones your team needs every day.

The short answer

  • Choose Marketing Cloud Engagement when you market to many consumers across email, SMS, WhatsApp, mobile push and advertising, and need complex, data-driven journeys.
  • Choose Account Engagement when you sell to businesses, run longer sales cycles and need lead scoring, nurture programmes and a tight handoff to sales reps in Sales Cloud.
  • Some organisations use both: Engagement for customer and member communication, Account Engagement for new-business pipeline.

What Marketing Cloud Engagement does best

Marketing Cloud Engagement is designed for volume and complexity. Journey Builder lets you design multi-step journeys with decision splits, wait steps and goals. Email Studio, Mobile Studio and Advertising Studio cover the main channels, and data extensions let you hold large subscriber and behaviour datasets outside the core CRM.

  • Best for: retail and e-commerce, travel, financial services, education, membership and subscription businesses.
  • Strengths: high-volume sending, multi-channel journeys, advanced segmentation, personalisation at scale.
  • Watch out for: it needs a clear data model and someone who owns journeys and deliverability after launch.

What Account Engagement (Pardot) does best

Account Engagement lives much closer to Sales Cloud. Prospects, forms, landing pages and email programmes sync with leads and contacts, so marketers and sales reps see the same activity. Scoring and grading help sales focus on the right accounts, and Engagement Studio runs nurture programmes for longer B2B cycles.

  • Best for: SaaS, professional services, manufacturing, B2B distributors and any team where marketing hands leads to sales.
  • Strengths: lead scoring and grading, forms and landing pages, account-based marketing, sales alerts, pipeline reporting.
  • Watch out for: it is not designed for very high-volume consumer messaging or SMS-heavy programmes.

Side-by-side comparison

  • Audience: Engagement suits large consumer audiences; Account Engagement suits business buyers and accounts.
  • Channels: Engagement covers email, SMS, push, WhatsApp and advertising; Account Engagement focuses on email, forms and landing pages.
  • Data: Engagement uses its own data extensions and can connect to Data 360; Account Engagement works directly on Salesforce leads, contacts and campaigns.
  • Sales alignment: Account Engagement is tighter out of the box; Engagement connects through Marketing Cloud Connect.
  • Admin effort: Engagement usually needs more technical setup; Account Engagement is quicker for Salesforce admins to run.

Where Data 360 and Marketing Cloud Next fit

Salesforce is moving marketing closer to its core platform, with Data 360 (formerly Data Cloud) unifying customer profiles and newer Marketing Cloud editions running natively on Salesforce. If you are starting fresh, ask your partner to compare these newer options with the classic products before you sign licences.
